REDUCING THE LEGAL SUPPLY OF GUNS
People ask me, "What should I buy to prepare for the year 2000?" Sometimes they mean items for personal use. Sometimes they mean items for barter. Sometimes they mean items for re-sale.The correct answer is: "Anything that is cheap to buy now, will be valuable to own in the future, and will be out of production or very hard to get in the future."
This includes guns, even though they are not cheap. They are cheaper today than they will be in 2000. (Whoever wrote the screenplay for the gun store scene in THE TRIGGER EFFECT [1997] had the right idea.)
The U.S. government plans to tighten the legal supply of guns. On December 1, 1998, the FBI will begin collecting full information on every rifle and shotgun buyer who buys through a licensed dealer. The FBI will keep the information on the transaction your name, address, and Social Security number in its national computer for 18 months after the purchase. Then this information will be erased. They promise.
It will indeed be erased, but not necessarily voluntarily. There are some advantages to Y2K.
This isn't gun registration, of course. It's just an audit. You understand the difference.
There will also be a special federal fee per weapon for buyers. It's not clear how much yet: about $15.
This new law is called Brady II. The public isn't aware of it yet.
